The Prow Building
Gateway Center Boulevard, Bronx, New York
What was once a neighborhood fruit and vegetable market is now a USGBC LEED Silver certified commercial and retail attraction known as the Prow Building located at the southern tip of the Gateway Center at Bronx Terminal Market, a project constructed by Related.
Studio 5 completed the design development and construction drawings for this adaptive re-use project. The task was to convert a 45,000 SF historic building into a commercial building containing upscale retail shops.
The concrete exterior skin and superstructure of the building was salvaged, but both structural and aesthetic repairs were necessary along with new storefronts and canopies. The distinctive lettering inset into the façade was also refurbished.
Some of the “green” building strategies employed were; highly reflective/high emissivity roofing, reuse of existing building components, specification of local/regional building materials, thermally efficient building envelope and specifying low-emitting building materials.
